What is a Full Denture?
A full denture is offered to patients who are missing an entire arch of teeth. Whether it is the top or bottom row, dentures include a set of replacement teeth that are placed onto a gum-colored base. For individuals needing a top denture, it will be custom-made to cover the entire roof of the mouth, whereas, a bottom denture is made into the shape of a horseshoe. This is to allow enough room for the tongue to move freely.
When inquiring about dentures, we will examine your mouth and take impressions. These will serve to help dental lab technicians build your customized prosthetic, so it properly fits in your mouth. Once it is ready, you’ll return to our office to have them placed. Full dentures are made to sit on top of the gums, so your natural suction is what keeps them in place, but many patients opt to purchase additional denture adhesive to provide an added level of security.
What is a Partial Denture?
A partial denture works very much like a puzzle piece. If you are missing multiple teeth along an arch, a custom partial can be made to fill in the gaps of your smile. Using the same gum-colored base and artificial teeth, your dentist in Houston will use the clips that are fashioned to the partial and connect them to your natural teeth. This will hold the partial in place.
Our team will take impressions just as we would with an individual receiving full dentures. Technicians will work to craft your partial so that when it arrives in our office, it will fit beautifully into place.
What is an Implant-Retained Denture?
Patients looking for a more stable solution can find it with implant-retained dentures. Not only will this method of tooth replacement provide greater functionality, but it also lasts longer than other restorative methods.
Your dentist will need to examine your mouth and discuss your oral and overall medical history to determine if you are a qualified candidate. Individuals whose bone is weak or deteriorating or those who smoke or have a compromised immune system may need to seek other forms of treatment, as each of these problems can result in implant failure.
If Dr. Dodig believes you are suitable for dental implant placement, she will work alongside a periodontist to place your implant-retained denture. Using between 4 and 6 implants, these titanium posts, which are meant to mimic your natural tooth root, will be strategically and surgically placed along the jawbone. After stitching up the areas, you’ll return home to heal and allow the implants to properly fuse to the bone. Once you are fully healed, you’ll return to our office to have your customized denture secured into place.
What Are the Benefits of an Implant-Retained Denture?
- Greater stability – Because implants are surgically placed, they will not fall out.
- Increased confidence – You won’t have to worry about functionality when it comes to chewing, eating, or speaking.
- Improved appearance – Not only will you not have to worry about facial collapse (sagging), but you’ll once again have a full and complete smile.
- Better oral health – Implants fit into your jawbone, which helps to stimulate it and keep the bone strong. This serves to benefit your teeth and gums.
- Longer-lasting solution – Dental implants of all kinds are meant to last decades if not a lifetime with proper care and minimal maintenance.
